Dear Readers
this blog is now merely an „archive“ and no longer being updated.
Since August 2017 new articles are exclusively available under the new URL:
http://andreas-wolter.com/en/blog/

The complex multilingualism (German and English professionally manually translated) is being continued – but solved differently in terms of layout. With that I most likely still operate the only multilingual IT-Blog worldwide.
I hope you like the new design.

My currently last article, which is exclusively available at the new website for the first time, is Optimizing workflows with In-Memory and Natively Compiled Objects - or how it does not work

First off, the most important information in a nutshell:
From 26-28 June, I am conducting a new SQL Server Master-Class: The Performance Troubleshooting Bootcamp with SQLSentry (shorthand: PSS*). For those in a hurry, the link for registration right below:

 SentryOne Master-Class

Background to the Master-Class series

Since 2013, I have been conducting these open seminars under the label SQL Server Master-Class once or twice a year (and additionally inhouse with clients, as needed). The first ones were 2-day classes on Extended Events (SQL Server Master-Class Seminars – The tools at your fingertips – Start in May with Extended Events).
With these trainings I seek an in-depth and practice-oriented approach to teaching the topics – thus offering an alternative or complement to the MOC trainings that suffer from various problems (unrealistic thematic diversity, faulty material, inexperienced because cheap trainers – “you get what you pay for”, etc.).

This has been a successful approach, as you can read in these customer reviews

Warum eine Master-Class zu SQLSentry?

Beginnen wir mal mit:

Warum SQLSentry?

Why a Master-Class on SQLSentry?

Let’s start with:

Why SQLSentry?
One may wonder why someone like me who is acting independently of third-parties is now offering a training strongly based (approx. 50%) on the software of a certain manufacturer.

I am happy to elaborate on this. But first, let’s take a step back:

The reason as to why I am reluctant to refer to certain software (or hardware) manufacturers is that decisions based on them will naturally be attributed to me. And even with SQL Server itself, it is a challenge to recommend the most suitable (“the best,” if you will), feature for particular demands. That is my main task, and that is what I am a (two-fold) Master for. Keeping track of other software manufacturers, their tools and, above all, their varying quality, on top of all this, is tough.

Therefore, it must really be the very best tool in a particular area, and with sufficient continuity, before I associate my name with it. And it so happens that SQLSentry by SentryOne is without doubt its own league in the area of Monitoring SQL Server (but also SSAS and Azure components).

Why? If it was just a single feature, I would not be sticking to it.

- By the way: especially as an MVP one gets contacted a lot by software-producers and can test their products or write articles on them. – This is not the case here. This Master-Class and this article are based on my own initiative.

SQLSentry contains a plethora of specialized components for different areas in SQL Server, of which some are also patented, but I will try to keep it short and just name the most particular ones:

  • The Event Calendar merges all SQL Agent Jobs but also Windows Tasks and striking Performance Events in an outlook-style calendar format, thus allowing for time correlations.

  • Intelligent Alerting allows you to define complex conditions – because oftentimes, singular Performance Metrics alone do not suffice for an evaluation. With this feature, they can be combined. And this is how Pro-Active Monitoring is possible (!).

  • The Disk-Activity view shows the SQL file usage in a detailed graphic representation.

  • The AlwaysOn Availability Group Visualizations show the architecture and utilization of the Availability Groups – in fact, what’s still missing is something comparable for Replication. :-)

  • Index- and statistics analysis – from fragmentation down to histogram level

  • Job Chaining – chaining processes of different components across servers
  • And of course, the Performance Dashboard itself: it shows not only the utilization of the server (Windows, SQL and possibly VM Host), but it also makes it possible to quickly create one’s own baselines or to rely on automatically created ones (like “last week,” “yesterday”) and save them for comparisons.

 SQLSentry_performance-advisor_dashboard

Apart from the mere features that are already in themselves unrivaled, there are at least 2 more aspects that are important to a professional Performance Monitoring tool:

  1. Low Overhead on the monitored system: As a matter of fact, SentryOne is the only manufacturer to have published detailed numbers on the impact on the monitored server – and due to the optimized self-developed technology, it is very low – unlike what you will often hear about other tools.

SQL Sentry: Overhead Analysis: http://bit.ly/SQLSentryOverheadAnalysisDOC

 2. Update cycles: Also an important aspect. The tool is continually being developed further. Generally, there are 2-4 updates a year, which are included in the maintenance service (as is support).

(Ich bin also keineswegs SentryOne gegenüber irgendwie verpflichtet.)

These are the reasons as to why I can back my “product recommendation” with a clear conscience, knowing well that this product will be further maintained and updated at a high level on an ongoing basis.

However, I do not mean to say that one shouldn’t also consider other tools from time to time. It depends on one’s environment: Size, complexity, performance level, SLA (reaction time: proactive, or is reactive sufficient?), and, again, time: Time to manually execute important correlations, time to build certain visualizations oneself. – For those with time on their hands, a saving of approx. 1 consultant day rate (per monitored server) may make sense, and I would not hesitate to recommend this myself. That’s also what I am here to help with. (So just to be clear, I am in no way obliged to SentryOne.)

Ganz einfach: Die Nachfrage.

So why a Master-Class on SQLSentry?

Having justified the choice tool, let’s now turn to the initial question:

It’s simple: The demand. I have several clients by now who work with SQLSentry. Since this tool is comprehensive and powerful, as described above, it makes absolutely sense to learn the handling and configuration possibilities in detail in order to achieve the set goals: proactive monitoring, time-efficient troubleshooting.

On top of that, I decided to split the training about 50-50 into native SQL techniques and specific handling of SQLSentry. The reason is that in my opinion, a certain knowledge of SQL Server’s internal mechanisms and monitoring possibilities serve, for one, the understanding of why SQLSentry does this or that in such and such a way, and, secondly, an occasional excursion directly to the SQL Server makes sense over the course of a practical troubleshooting.

·       Memory Probleme

·       Identifizieren von Plan Regression

·       Analyse von Indexen & Statistiken

·       Erkennen von I/O Latenzproblemen

·       Untersuchen von Tempdb-Performance

·       Locking & Blocking Analyse

·       Deadlocks

Therefore, we will be working with the Windows Performance Monitor (short: Perfmon), Dynamic Management Views (DMVs), and Extended Events, which are the tools of choice for In-Depth-Analysis, and whose use will be learned here. For the identification of Plan Regression, SQL Server Query Store of course lends itself for this purpose.

With all these techniques we will be looking at different scenarios:

  • Memory problems

  • Identifying Plan Regression

  • Analysis of Indexes & Statistics

  • Identifying I/O Latency problems

  • Analyzing Tempdb Performance

  • Locking & Blocking Analysis

  • Deadlocks

It feels like I have just been back from the SQLBits XV in Liverpool, where I introduced the Security Features of the SQL Server 2016 (SQL Server 2016 - Security Obscurity and Encryption), and next thing I know, I am already in the middle of planning the next SQL Server Master-Class on High Availability with SQL Server (SHA) that is going to take place from 20-22 June near Frankfurt a.M.

Note: in the 2 weeks since activation of registration already 70% of the places have already been filled. If you want to secure a spot but don’t know how you’re your purchase department will make it, you are welcome to contact me directly.
- Members of PASS Deutschland e.V. will once again receive a 15% discount.

But before, the German SQLSaturday „Rheinland“ is taking place, like the previous two years.
My company, Sarpedon Quality Lab®, will be a sponsor again like last year.

I will also be presenting. This time, it is going to be on the entirely classical topic of Performance Tracing. However, not with SQL Profiler as can be seen once in a while “in the wild,” but of course with current technologies such as Extended Events and even the new Query Store by SQL Server 2016:

Performance Analyzing SQL Server workloads with DMVs and XEvents

This session you will be lead you through an example performance-analysis using mainly DMVs and Extended Events. You will see how a top-down analysis using built-in tools can be conducted. This will include wait statistics on different scopes to identify performance problems and bottlenecks up to identifying query plan changes – with & without using the Query Store of SQL Server 2016. If you are new to performance analyzing this session will give you a practical insight into how to methodically approach performance troubleshooting.

Asien

Asia

In August, I will be traveling Asia again and attending the largest SQL Server Conference in Asia for the second time in a row: the SQL Server Geeks Summit in Bangalore, India.

Bangalore

This time, I will be giving a full-day Pre-Con. Topic: The In-Memory Storage Engine of SQL Server that have been extensively improved with SQL Server 2016. That is, it will be about ColumnStore, Memory Optimized Tables, Memory Optimized Indexes, and the combination possibilities with traditional Row-Store or also ColumnStore for Mixed OLAP as well as OLTP workloads.
It will definitely be super exciting and very technical. If you haven’t dealt with this yet: it is about time! The way of conceptualizing and designing databases is changing rapidly at the moment. I am sticking to my predictions that ColumnStore will soon be the standard for Datawarehousing, and In-Memory OLTP the standard for high performing OLTP scenarios.
At this Pre-Con, I will be demonstrating the technical background and feasibility.

Pre-Con Title:

The Present and Future: In-Memory in SQL Server – from 0 to Operational Analytics Master

Track:                DBA/DEV

Pre-Con Abstract:

When the Columnstore Index technology, based on the xVelocity In-Memory engine, came with SQL Server 2012 in the form of Nonclustered Columnstore, and SQL Server 2014 brought us updatable Clustered Columnstore Indexes plus a completely new In-Memory OLTP Engine, “XTP”, for memory optimized table & indexes, those features were still new and because of their limitations used only rarely.

SQL Server 2016 takes both technology onto a whole new level:

Columnstore indexes among other things now support snapshot isolation and hence fully support readable secondaries. Batch execution is not exclusively for parallel threaded queries anymore. They can be combined with other B-tree indexes and even be filtered and support referential integrity with primary and foreign key constraints. Also so-called In-Memory Operational Analytics is supported by the ability to create Columnstore Indexes on memory optimized tables.

On the other hand the In-Memory engine has been extensively improved in terms of both scalability and T-SQL language support, taking away many of the relevant limitations for adaption of version 1 in a similar way than the Columnstore technology. For example altering of pre-compiled objects is now possible, bucket-counts can be adjusted, natively compiled stored procedures can be recompiled and foreign keys are supported as well as encryption with TDE.

All those improvements will make In-Memory technologies a viable option in many projects. For Datawarehouses many (including me) say, that Columnstore will become the default storage type for all objects. And it can be foreseen that over the years the same will happen for OLTP-tables that have to support highly concurrent workloads will be based on memory optimized tables.

It’s time to extend our skills to those technologies to be able implement and support the new types of storage that are coming to our databases to address the fact of ever more data being stored and queried and performance demands and (real time) analytic requirements going up.

At this full-day training day, Microsoft Certified Master for the Data Platform Andreas Wolter, familiar with SQL Servers In-Memory technologies from the early bits on, will give a complete picture on the current state of technology. Added to that I will give two more normal sessions at the main conference. The topics are not final yet.

I am looking forward to the enthusiastic audience in India again!

After India I will be presenting at SQLSaturday Singapore. This event will be held at Microsoft Singapore Operations Pte Ltd, One Marina Boulevard – right in the center of the most famous sights of Singapore.

Also here I might give a PreCon, but the planning is not finalized yet, so let’s see what it will be. I am very much looking forward to this event as well.

Conferences in the second half of 2015: From Asia to America to Europe // Konferenzen im 2. Halbjahr 2015: Von Asien über Amerika bis Europa

(DE)

(EN)
I’m sitting in the plane from San Francisco, where the Oracle Java One conference is taking place this week, to Seattle, where I will be participating in the PASS Summit and seeing and hearing the latest on SQL Server 2016.

Prior to this peak of conferences which I will be attending for the 7th consecutive year I also visited a couple of other conferences as a speaker in this half year alone.

Unfortunately, I am only now finding a moment to report on where I have been and where I will be during the course of these 6 months.

In August, I attended conferences in Asia for the first time: first, the SQL Saturday Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur, and then in India.

In Malaysia, acting in my capacity as the only German, if not European, I had the honor of giving 2 presentations:

  1. In-Memory OLTP Vol1 – XTP Fundamentals & Future Development
  2. “SQL Attack…ed” – SQL Server under attack via SQL Injection

One and a half weeks later, I was in India, at the SQL Server Geeks Summit in Bangalore – the first ever to take place in India.

A fantastic event. This was largely due to the positive attitude of the many volunteer helpers on site. From what I heard they got up every day at 5 am or earlier in order to arrive on time to prepare everything, not minding the hours-long journey from the outskirts of the mega-city to the conference center – which was relatively conveniently located for the speakers and with respect to the Indian traffic.

Here, too, I gave 2 presentations:

  • Tracing With Extended Events – Top Features
  • SQL Server Under Attack via SQL Injection

In my opinion, the SQL Server Geeks Summit was one of the best SQL Server conferences world-wide right from the start. I would consider it among the top 5. – And I have already presented at least once at almost all major SQL Server conferences in Europe and in the US.

Back in Germany, I went on to speak at 3 User Group Meetings of PASS Germany in September: at the Regional Chapter Meetings Ruhrgebiet in Essen, Rheinland in Cologne und Rhein/Main in Bad Homburg. There, I gave my new presentation on “A journey into SQL Server Storage (from memory to disc).”

Besides that, on 13 October, I was a guest speaker at the SQLDays conference in Erdingen where I presented the SQL Server 2016, and this probably for the first time in public in Germany. Also, I presented the In-Memory OLTP Engine with its forthcoming new features:

  • SQL Server 2016: Performance, Skalierbarkeit und Sicherheit – Neues und Verbesserungen // Performance, Scalability and Security – Innovations and Improvements
  • SQL Server 2014-2016: In-Memory OLTP & Operational Analytics

Now, after stops in New York and San Francisco, I am on my way to Seattle to give my 6th presentation at the largest SQL Server conference in the world, the PASS Summit. It will be a short teaser from my Extended Events presentations:

After the PASS Summit, I will proceed to the MVP Summit, exclusively held for MVPs. There at the latest I will take the opportunity to directly connect with a few product teams and exchange knowledge and ideas. – Above all, with the security team, because SQL Server 2016 will see a couple of major innovations in this area indeed. And I will present these innovations at the PASS Camp in December.

The second hot topic is the upgrading of the In-Memory Engine which I have introduced from the outset at various conferences – at a time when the hurdles were still quite big. I can already tell you this much: This will change with SQL Server 2016 for sure!

Once I’m back in Germany, I will be at the Microsoft Technical Summit in Darmstadt from 17-18 November where I will have the privilege of introducing SQL Server 2016. Just like in the previous years, this is a great honor for me.

This my year of international conferences will finish with the PASS Camp mentioned above (1-3 December).

I would be happy to personally welcome some of my readers on one of these occasions. One does not necessarily need to cross oceans for this. :-)

Finally, a current note:

From 23-27 November, one of my popular SQL Server Master-Classes takes place in Düsseldorf: the MC1: Workshop SQL Server 2014 for Administrators. In fact, it sold out within 4 weeks. However, thanks to a room change, I can reserve a spot for the first person who indicates the following code at registration:  MC1BlogSpecial. Note that I can only guarantee the participation for the first to apply this code when registering. In addition to this, the code also qualifies for a 15% discount on the seminar fee.

Hint: Members of PASS Germany and clients of Sarpedon Quality Lab will obtain special discount codes. If unsure, please contact me directly.

My conference-sessions in 2015: from Extended Events over In-Memory to Security

Finally I get to write about my conference-talks in 2015.

The year started really great with the German SQL Server Konferenz in Darmstadt with 2 sessions on In-Memory OLTP in SQL Server 2014 – one of them being even a full-day PreCon, which I co-presented with Niko Neugebauer,  who was talking about Clustered ColumnStore Indexes.

PreCon: “In-Memory Internas: Clustered Columnstore & In-Memory OLTP Deep Dive”

Session: “In-Memory OLTP für Entwickler“ (In-Memory OLTP for Developers)

In March I was happy to have been speaker for the second time at the SQLBits in London -
probably THE event outside of PASS in Europe if not worldwide.
There I presented one of my favorite topics on Performancetools: Extended Events

Extended Events – Top Features

In April I joined the SQLDay Poland for the first time, giving a session on Locking & Blocking and a second session on Security, namely SQL Injection:

From Locks to Dead-locks.  – Concurrency in SQL Server

“SQL Attack…ed” – SQL Server under attack via SQL Injection

For June I am happy to be able to announce that I will again present on Extended Events at the SQL Saturday #409 Rheinland/Germany. -
In fact I have already presented at the first German SQL Saturday in 2012 on Extended Events (“Tracing with SQL Server 2012 Extended Events”) – I hope this year it will be the final round to get even the last one off from the old & dusty SQL Profiler.

Added to that I am honored to give one of the 2 full day and free of cost PreCons: Together with Patrick Heyde, Microsoft (Technet-Blog), I will talk on SQL Server in Azure Environments. Specifically on how to optimally configure such a deployments to performance and cost-efficiency at the same time. (Also see my blog article “SQL Server in Microsoft Azure: How to gain performance by flexibility and save costs at the same time”)

Besides giving a free PreCon and regular session, my Company Sarpedon Quality Lab is again officially sponsoring this home-event. This is part of my commitment to the German PASS Community – especially since my own family starts taking more time, this is a bit of what I can do to support the PASS Deutschland e.V..

PreCon: Hybrid IT – Azure Scenarios & Dynamic Infrastructure

Tracing with Extended Events – Top Features

-           If you are still using Profiler, or just started with XEvents, be sure to come along to see some of the nifty features ;-)

In September I will be at the SQLSaturday #413 Denmark in Copenhagen, organized among other by Regis Baccaro. I will be giving yet another PreCon on In-Memory OLTP and Clustered ColumnStore and a regular session on SQL Server storage.

PreCon: New Index technologies: Clustered ColumnStore and In-Memory OLTP: the good and the bad

A journey into SQL Server Storage - from Memory to Disk

I hope to see YOU :-)
